Scouting... an exciting life adventure

Challenging Life's Limits

The st James Scout Group began in 1938 as a land Scout group based at St James Church Lower Hutt.  In 1955 under the leadership of Doug "Skip" Markin and  following a camp in the Wairarapa where the Scouts had boating experiences , the Group became Sea Scouts. The Group built a boatshed at the mouth of the Hutt River and has been a very active group in sailing and rowing since that time. In 1991 the boat shed was demolished and the new Scout hall and boatshed was established. The group uses and maintains boats made by members of the over the last 50 years.

While St. James is a Sea Scout Group and undertakes a lot of water-based activities, it also participates in all normal land-based activities provided by other Scout Groups.

We offer an exciting and challenging programme for boys and girls aged 6 to 18 years.

The outdoors, on water or land, is a key part of our programme and presents us with unlimited opportunities for the development of life skills.

All parents and families are encouraged to join in the activities of the Group. Prior experience in scouting is not required.
